Scaffolding has come a long way to ensure construction sites are
safe to work in. It is an advancement that is widely accepted now with many
regulatory bodies encouraging people to use scaffolding for the safety of their
workers. As a site manager or owner, here are the top three hazards you should
look out for if you are using scaffolding.
Falls
These
are the most prevalent occurrences with devastating results. Construction workers
are always on the risk of falling from heights if they do not have fall
protection systems and guardrails installed. The set rules demand that
guardrails and personal fall arrest systems be installed to protect everyone
working higher than the ground.
Electrocution
This
is another prevalent risk. When erecting scaffolding, there are people who will
disregard the hazard that open power cables might bring on to the people
working on the platforms. There have been cases of electrocution, and the best
thing that one can do is to observe the recommended distance between scaffolds
and electrical lines which is at least 10ft.
Bad
Planking
Poorly
cleated planks are a clear ticket to accidents. It will be hard for a worker
working on such a platform to prevent themselves from
falling, it is, therefore, advisable to cleat and fix the planks beforehand.
